			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft" title="Jesus Manifesto" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51DTQ--0rPL._SL75_.jpg" alt="" width="50" height="75" />Van een van ’s lands christelijke uitgevers mocht ik het manuscript van ‘Jesus Manifesto’ door Frank Viola en Leonard Sweet lezen. Een boek dat helemaal gaat over Jezus Christus – mooier kun je het niet hebben. Viola en Sweet (bekende Amerikaanse schrijvers en denkers, te plaatsen in het vrijdenkende, niet-traditionele deel) doen met hun Jesus Manifesto een appel op de lezer om Jezus Christus (weer) in het centrum te zetten. Van ons persoonlijk leven, van de kerk, van de geschiedenis, van het hele leven. Dat doen ze in tien hoofdstukken, gelardeerd met veel citaten en gebruikmakend van poëtisch taalgebruik en verschillende stijlen. Hun uitgangspunt: Jezus is grotendeels verdwenen uit ‘de kerk’, en Hij moet weer terug naar het midden! Het eerste hoofdstuk zet direct de toon: ‘Jesus Christ is the centerpiece of God’s universe’, het voorwerp van alle dingen: de schepping, de hemelen, het Oude Testament en het Nieuwe Testament. De volgende hoofdstukken beschrijven hoe Christus in alles is en alles in Christus en hoe Hij de oorsprong en doel van ons eigen leven is; dit laatste zelfs vanuit het oogpunt van God beschreven. Maar het boek doet meer dan alleen de bijbel citeren. Het probeert ook duidelijk te maken dat het tegenwoordig in het christendom meer om het ‘-dom’ gaat dan om Christus zelf. In een prachtig hoofdstuk wordt dat geïllustreerd aan de hand van de twee bomen uit de Hof van Eden: voor veel christenen draait het leven nog steeds om goed en kwaad, terwijl Jezus nu de boom van het leven zelf is. Een tweede aangename verrassing in dit boek was de ‘betekenis van Bethanië’ – een klein plaatsje buiten Jeruzalem dat voor de schrijvers model staat voor alles wat Jezus zoekt in elke stad op aarde.</p>
<p>In meer dan 200 bladzijden doen de auteurs dus hun uiterste best om een beeld neer te zetten van Jezus in al zijn glorie. Daar gebruiken ze veel en grootse woorden voor. Jammer genoeg is er geen sprake van een duidelijke opbouw, of beter gezegd van het ‘uitpakken’ van het onderwerp. De enorme hoeveelheid superlatieven begint op den duur wat averechts te werken, en dat is erg jammer. Wellicht dat dit voor andere lezers minders storend is; mij doet het soms wat teveel aan de mooie maar soms holle woorden van vroeger denken.</p>
<p>Ook inhoudelijk valt er nog wel wat aan te merken. Met een manifest valt het te verwachten dat niet alles even genuanceerd is, maar er wordt hier en daar forse kritiek geuit op ‘de kerken’. Dat mag, maar die kritiek is niet altijd even concreet en constructief. Een voorbeeld: <em>The gospel that’s so often preached today lacks a revelation of Jesus Christ. The contemporary gospel boils down to a fire-insurance policy, a Santa Claus God, or a performancebased religion. As long as we stay on that plane, we’ll never see or comprehend the staggering enormity of our Lord (p183).</em> Ik vermoed dat deze stoere woorden weinig mensen helpen te zien dat <em>hun</em> prediking wordt bedoeld of dat <em>zij</em> een Sinterklaas-God hebben. Beter is gelukkig het hoofdstuk The Forgotten Tree dat een scherpe, herkenbare en positief prikkelende tegenstelling tussen ‘goed en kwaad’ en ‘leven’ neerzet.</p>
<p>Afgezien van de bewoordingen waarin ze dat doen, ben ik zeer blij met wat de schrijvers over Jezus zeggen. Maar tegelijkertijd vind ik dat ze op z’n minst één – zeer wezenlijk – element missen: liefde, en het beeld van de <em>geliefde</em> en <em>liefhebbende</em> Zoon van God. De motivatie voor zijn menswording, de relatie tussen Vader, Zoon en Geest, de oorsprong van het leven – alles draait om de liefde van God-Jezus. Natuurlijk, het woord ‘love’ staat heus wel in het boek. Maar in zo’n statement als dit manifest had dat een veel prominentere plek moeten hebben. Overigens niet alleen vanuit een inhoudelijke overweging, ook voor het overbrengen van de boodschap had het goed geweest. Het is soms lastig te pakken dat het hele leven ontstaat uit en is terug te voeren tot één persoon, en soms slagen Viola en Sweet daar ook niet helemaal in. Vermoedelijk had de verbeelding van liefde tussen huwelijkspartners heel veel goeds kunnen doen om voorbij het intellectuele naar het hartsniveau af te dalen.</p>
<p>Alles overziend: Jesus Manifesto doet wat het moet doen: een krachtig en vurig pleidooi voor de persoon Jezus Christus als ‘middelpunt van ons verlangen’. Het boek had als manifest wat mij betreft best wat<em> </em>korter gekund, en tegelijkertijd als ‘theologie’ is het nog maar het begin. Er is weinig hedendaags verfrissends dat op vergelijkbare wijze Jezus weer zo centraal zet. Ik hoop dat mijn vriend de uitgever z’n best gaat doen dit zo snel mogelijk in de boekhandel te krijgen!</p>

And although I was still only one day older than the day before, it seems to be quite a milestone to many people. Admittedly I made a little fuzz about it myself, which might have given the impression that I actually was nervous about it, which I don’t think is true. But then again – it is kind of a marker date and as such a good moment to look back and look ahead. So this is the first post in a series of two, the next one titled ‘Ten Things I Should Do In My Forties’.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft" title="Prison Break" src="http://www.athletesinaction.nl/wp-content/uploads/AIA-Voorjaars-Event-2010.jpg" alt="" width="148" height="209" />Last week I wrote a blog called &#8216;<a href="http://www.boerenroem.nl/2010/04/19/good-news-to-the-poor/">Good news to the poor</a>&#8216; in which I referred to the verses from Luke 4/Isaiah 61. This verse happens to be the motto for <a href="http://www.athletesinaction.nl">Athletes in Action</a>&#8216;s summer outreach to Africa. <em>Good news for the poor, sight to the blind, freedom for prisoners. </em>And because they had their spring event last weekend, <a href="http://mededthegreat.blog.com/">Matthijs</a> asked me to write on this theme also. Too late and unexpectedly, I got some inspiration yesterday &#8211; so here it is, Matthijs.</p>
<p>The inspiration comes again from a meeting in church &#8211; the same where I met Nermin last week. (He was there again, by the way; this time he had pain in his arm and chest because he had had a scooter accident just an hour before. Refused to go to the hospital and left the church premises before the service started&#8230;) Anyway. After the service yesterday, I got to talk to a visitor who told me a bit of his story. A guy with Middle-Eastern background, a political refugee who, as a student, had stood up for freedom for his ethnic group. He has paid for that ever since: imprisoned without any notice; tortured for six months, chained to hands and feet in a prison cell with Koran verses on the loudspeakers 24/7. Released after media pressure (through Amnesty International) and now in The Netherlands for already 20 years. The sad story is that his life is still heavily marked by his past. In recent years he lost his wife &amp; family in divorce, his home, his job&#8230; and is in fact as much captive as he was back in the prison cell.</p>
<p>We talked about his first church experience. He was touched by the atmosphere, the people, the view of God and religion. &#8216;I&#8217;ve seen too much of the effects of true islam to be a muslim&#8217;, he said; &#8216;I know I should learn more about Jesus&#8217;. And that&#8217;s what we&#8217;re going to do the next few weeks &#8211; helping him to  understand what it is all about. Good news for the poor of spirit, freedom to those captured in their own fears and hurts, sight to those that lost all hope&#8230;</p>
<blockquote><p>The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed  me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the  brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from  darkness for the prisoners…</p></blockquote>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1065" title="armeko" src="http://www.boerenroem.nl/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/armeko-100x100.jpg" alt="" width="100" height="100" />Yesterday I met him again, my friend Nermin. Originally from the Balkan, now living in Almere in a beautiful part of the city. His place has 6 bathrooms, a huge pond and a basketball court. The only problem: it has no roof. And actually, the bathrooms are the public ones near the Weerwater lake and the basketball court is covered with junk and garbage as if it was the town&#8217;s dump. Nermin is homeless. All of his belongings are packed in a (stolen) shopping cart. On top of it a huge ghetto blaster, making it easy to identify Nermin wherever he is going.</p>
<p>So, there he was again. Sitting on the bench at our church, apparently enjoying himself with the people, the sunlight and an old cigarette. He stayed outside while we started the service, but obviously needed someone to talk to. So I sat down next to him, chatting with this homeless, psychotic, alcoholic, dirty, poor beggar. He was clearly in a bad state but also aware of it himself. As always, he asked for money, and as always, I said no. He told about the experience he had had many years ago that convinced him that God existed. I listened to his story, asked some questions, tried to debit a few thoughts to him, invited him to come in and be part of the service. As I prayed for him, he cried.</p>
<p>About half an hour later, I was back in the service, and as it turned out, Nermin had followed me. I noticed him talking to other people after service, but when I met him outside again, he was very confused and left the church, clearly very angry. Later I heard he had been begging inside the church, and that there had been an incident causing people to ask him to leave the building.</p>
<p>Why am I writing all this? Because I actually don&#8217;t know what to do. Should I have given him money? I don&#8217;t think so. Did it feel good not to give him money? No. Was it right to invite him into the service? I think so. Was it right to ask him to leave? I think so too. Do I want to help him? Yes. Can I actually, really, seriously help him? I don&#8217;t think so&#8230;</p>
<p>I really wonder: how did Jesus do this? In Luke 4, he starts his public appearance in a church by reading Scripture, applying it to himself and putting the words into practice when he meets a &#8216;Nermin&#8217; the week after. And honestly, it makes me jealous. I wish Jesus was here to meet my  friend Nermin. I wish I could be Jesus to him.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Thursday afternoon. The phone rings. It is our friend John, saying he is in need of a little help and some encouragement. He says he wants to go to church on Sunday and Mira explains what, when and how. We are pleasantly surprised, as it is a place he has never been before in his life.</p>
<p>Easter Sunday, afternoon. Our service is going to be a little different than usual; a short time of worship, sermon and prayer, then out to the playground nearby to have a picnic lunch together. I am pleasantly surprised that John is there. Mira’s sermon is very short. She shares about the reality of the resurrection of Jesus (more proof than for Julius Ceasar’s existence) and shows a little clip of a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly. It is true transformation, new life out of the old. Nobody calls a butterfly a ‘transformed caterpillar’. That new life is given to us in Jesus Christ, through the Holy Spirit.</p>
<p>After service, John joins in for the picnic. As we are enjoying the food, he shares his heart: how he is suffering from negative feelings, how he is unable to maintain relationships the way he wants to, how he is failing in his marriage. I ask him what he thinks of the service. His response: I need to get on my feet again; I think I need some kind of a resurrection. For the third time this week, I am pleasantly surprised by John: his insight and ability to apply the message are remarkable. Pray with us that he will find the ultimate Resurrection Power.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>De ogen van de natie zijn deze dagen gericht op mijn woonplaats Almere. Dat werd eens tijd ook, want er is genoeg moois over te zeggen. Jammer alleen dat de aanleiding niet zo mooi is. De mogelijke (aanstaande?) eerste overwinning van de PVV op lokaal niveau zou zich hier en/of in Den Haag kunnen voltrekken.</p>
<p>Tja, de PVV. Op het lokale verkiezingsfoldertje staan de foto van de lijsttrekker én van Wilders – goedkeurend glimlachend. Op de achtergrond een 10-puntenprogramma met wat men wil bereiken. Een greep uit het programma: minder islam, veilig Almere, Almere voor Almeerders, geen gebruikersruimten voor junks en ‘stop linkse hobby’s’. Ze zijn alvast begonnen met het bedreigen van winkeliers, afgelopen zondag. En voor de rest mag ik alleen maar hopen en bidden dat het met een sisser afloopt – al is de kans daarop klein.</p>
<p>‘Geef me één goede reden waarom ik niet PVV zou stemmen’, hoorde ik gisteren een christen citeren. Nou, ik weet er wel een paar. André Rouvoet sloeg de spijker op z’n kop in zijn <a href="http://www.christenunie.nl/k/nl/n91/news/view/423329/48130/Bestuur-draagt-Rouvoet-voor-als-kandidaat-lijsttrekker.html">toespraak</a> gisteravond bij de ChristenUnie bijeenkomst. De PVV in Den Haag pleit voor ‘een genadeloze aanpak van overlast en agressie’. Rouvoet: “Dat woord bleef bij mij hangen: ‘genadeloos’. Daarmee laat de PVV zich diep in het hart kijken. Dat woord typeert precies waar het naartoe gaat als we op deze voet doorgaan: een genadeloze samenleving.” De PVV staat voor een genadeloze, harde samenleving waarin het alleen draait om eigen ‘geluk’. De PVV staat voor uitsluiting van de vreemdeling – in flagrante tegenspraak met de ‘christelijke beschaving’ die ze zegt te verdedigen. Christenen worden opgeroepen de vreemdeling te verwelkomen, om te zien naar armen, weduwen en wezen – naar elkaar. Kom daar maar eens om.</p>
<p>Afijn. Je mag zelf weten wat je stemt morgen – maar doe het in ieder geval. En laat je niet regeren door de geert – pardon, geest van angst maar door de Geest van liefde, kracht en bezonnenheid.</p>

One thing that he was very good at was choosing the title: Revolution Now! is my favourite, but I also like the one that heads this post. It came to my mind last weekend, while discussing the future of our movement with some colleagues from different countries.</p>
<p>Among many other things, we talked about the question what we are actually here for. As most of you know, Agapè exists to help people find Jesus, grow in their faith and help them to reach out to others as well. But that is only one way to put it. Another way is to say that we&#8217;re here to &#8216;help fulfill the <a href="http://www.youversion.com/bible/asv/matt/28/19">Great Commission</a> in our generation&#8217;. Now, this might come closer but probably still has not the same appeal as Bill Bright&#8217;s motto &#8216;Come, help change the world&#8217;. I believe this is what Bright had in mind, and nothing less. And I believe he was right in that: we&#8217;re not here just to save individual souls, but to change this world. (Note that by now, I&#8217;m not just talking about Agapè but about every follower of Jesus!)</p>
<p>This started me thinking. What does it mean to change the world? Is this just a matter of evangelising every person in the country? Or should we work the other way around: infiltrate the United Nations and work from there? My answers and thoughts are far from complete, but there are a few things I am convinced of. First of all: it all starts with the individual. &#8216;Integrity is not in systems&#8217;, as I once heard a professor say. Making this world a better place implies changing people&#8217;s attitudes, values, behavior. And secondly: it implies changing things &#8216;between&#8217; people that cannot be dealt with on an individual level. I&#8217;m talking about relationships, culture, systems &#8211; that sort of things. An example: <em></em>I have experienced that even when changing the people in a certain setting, the ruling culture remained. It is even more obvious for political, economical and judicial <em>systems</em>. They don&#8217;t change by itself when the people change.</p>
<p>I tried to visualize this in the picture below: Starting with the individual, we want to see his or her values changed – repentance. This impacts relationships with the effect of reconciliation. When we see a community impacted by the gospel, it can influence the structures in a local society; cities start to change. When this happens, the systems of justice, politics, economics in a country are touched and in the end the entire country will see reformation.You could even extend this thinking a few levels more, with ultimately <em>Creation </em>being changed through <em>redemption (</em>Romans 8).</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In mijn blogje over Avatar van vorige week ging het over de &#8216;redemptive analogy&#8217; van iemand die incarneert in een andere wereld om die te redden. Nog wat verder denkend en pratend zagen we nog een boeiende lijn in de film. (Credits trouwens naar Mira &#8211; zij gaf de aanzet ervoor!)</p>
<p>In Avatar wordt over de aliens gezegd dat het mens-machine-wezens zijn. Aan het begin van de film wordt er nog wel wat aan gedaan om dat beeld vast te houden, maar tegen het einde is dat geen thema meer. Onze vriend Jake Sully is dan weliswaar één geworden met de Pandora-bewoners, maar als je goed oplet zijn die vooral meer menselijk geworden – met emoties, in staat om lief te hebben, met een (hoewel enigszins New-Age) hoog moreel waardenstelsel, met een behoefte aan seks, verbondenheid, geborgenheid. Kortom, de wezens blijken beslist geen machines te zijn, maar vooral menselijk &#8211; net zoals aardlingen, maar dan beter.</p>
<p>Ik vind dat opvallend. SF en fantasy zijn bij uitstek de genres waarbij een andere, betere wereld geschapen kan worden als oplossing voor onze gebrekkigheid, als een weg uit ons menselijk bestaan. C.S. Lewis doet dat bijvoorbeeld in zijn Ransom-trilogie (waar Avatar in veelkleurigheid en natuur-fantasie wel aan doet denken). Maar we komen daar &#8211; puntje bij paaltje &#8211; niet heel ver mee.</p>
<p>Een verklaring is in ieder geval dat niemand als dier of als machine door het leven wil, en dat de meeste mensen zich ook niet echt aangesproken voelen als een mens-held met een machine moet zoenen. Dat voelt toch als degeneratie, en ik vermoed dan ook dat Avatar niet de enige fantasy-film is waarbij de aliens meer menselijk worden naarmate de ontknoping dichterbij komt. Bovendien: de meeste ‘aliens’ die in films worden voorgesteld vind ik persoonlijk geen verbetering. Ik ben in ieder geval blij dat ik niet blauw ben en een staart heb!</p>
<p>Misschien willen we ondanks al onze gebreken (lees: oorlog, geweld, alles wat we elkaar aan doen) ons mens-zijn niet opgeven. Misschien kunnen we gewoonweg niets beters verzinnen dan een mens, zelfs als we er een half miljard euro aan spenderen. Misschien willen ten diepste niets anders dan volledig mens zijn! De mens is een uniek schepsel – geen ander wezen is zoals wij. En als je bedenkt dat we zijn geschapen naar Gods beeld – door Hem de kroon op de schepping genoemd – dan is dat toch eigenlijk niet zo vreemd.</p>
<p>Die God is trouwens geen vage moeder-godin-energie-in-alles, maar een <a href="http://www.boerenroem.nl/about-god">persoonlijk, concreet, scheppend Wezen</a>, die als Jezus de avatar werd, het voor ons opnam, en het <a href="http://www.biblija.net/biblija.cgi?m=joh10%3A10&amp;id42=0&amp;id18=1&amp;pos=0&amp;l=nl&amp;set=10">leven in al zijn volheid</a> teruggaf. We hoeven niet in een bos met witte linten te liggen, maar kunnen ons wel één maken met zijn Geest (<a href="http://www.biblija.net/biblija.cgi?m=1+kor+2%3A10-16&amp;id42=0&amp;id18=1&amp;pos=0&amp;l=nl&amp;set=10">lees maar</a>). Dat is geen verzonnen filmscript maar een betrouwbare waarheid.</p>

<p>Daniel comments on Bolkesteins&#8217; remarks concerning Christianity, which he (Bolkestein) calls a religion of guilt. He states: &#8216;Selfcriticism, selfrelativism and guilt are inherent to Christianity. Maybe that is the origin of our lack of selfconfidence&#8217;, refering to the allegedly soft way Europe is confronting Islam (a religion of shame). Daniel goes on to say that this could be true but only because &#8216;we&#8217; have taken the bigger picture out of Christianity, leaving it weak and irrelevant.</p>
<p>Jan describes his annoyment with Washers&#8217; message, who states that &#8216;everything should be about God&#8217;. This is brave, because how can one argue against such statement? Jan explains that it is Washer&#8217;s dualistic view that bothers him: some things are spiritual (and therefore good) and many other things in life are not (and therefore bad).</p>
<p>Why do I connect these two seemingly unrelated posts? Because I think Washer&#8217;s statements (as they are quoted in the article) are the perfect example of Bolkesteins statement. They are loaded with guilt, selfcriticism and judgment and take the heart out of the gospel &#8211; the big picture of God, out of love, rescuing creation and longing for relationship through Jesus Christ with people. And if &#8216;we&#8217; church-people don&#8217;t understand the big story, how can we ever expect others to start seeing it? Instead of being part of the solution (bringing peace and reconciliation to all people) we are actually part of the problem.</p>
